In an achievement, that highlights the spirit of innovation and contribution to local food
sufficiency, Biskra University Science and Technology Faculty students, Khaled Sohaila
and Hilal Wissal designed the first local machine to process quinoa grains to meet celiac
patients’ needs.
The machine is characterised by its ability to separate the saponins from
the quinoa kernel, making the grain edible, thus becoming a completely gluten-free and
nutritious food. Engineers, Ajal Hamza and Sadrati Sadiq, supervised this innovative
project and assisted the two students during the design and installation phases, under the
guidance and recommendations of the of the Faculty of Science and Technology Dean,
Pr. Ghodbane Hatem, and Pr. Mahmoud Debabeche, the University Rector, supports all
innovative activities and projects at the Biskra University. This achievement contributes
to the development of local industrialisation, and reduces dependence on food imports,
thereby increasing the opportunities for local quinoa cultivation and processing. The
project also reflects the importance of using technology to address pressing health and
nutrition issues. The University administration constantly reaffirms its commitment to
providing the optimal environment to embrace creative ideas and transform them into
entrepreneurial projects within the framework of the emerging enterprises.
